Financial abuse

Control over money, work and the practical means to leave.

  • Card 1

Financial abuse restricts someone's access to money, work or resources, which can make independence feel impossible. It is one of the most common reasons people stay in, or return to, a harmful relationship.

  • Card 2

Behaviours often described as financial abuse

    • Controlling all accounts, or requiring you to justify every purchase
    • Preventing you from working, studying or being paid
    • Taking your wages, benefits or savings
    • Running up debt in your name, or coercing you into loans
    • Giving you an 'allowance' while spending freely themselves
    • Sabotaging your job — interruptions, arguments before work, transport problems
