The Polyvagal Ladder
Polyvagal theory, developed by Dr Stephen Porges, offers a gentle map of the nervous system. Instead of "good" and "bad" states, it describes three predictable places your body can be: ventral vagal (safe and social), sympathetic (mobilised — fight or flight), and dorsal vagal (shut down). Deb Dana turned this map into a ladder: you climb up, you slide down, and neither is a failure. It's your body doing its job.
