Grief after a trauma bond can be complicated — you may be grieving the relationship as it actually was, the relationship you hoped it could become, and the version of yourself who believed in it. All of these losses can be real at once, and grief for a harmful relationship deserves as much care as any other grief.
This grief can include
- Mourning good moments that were also real
- Anger at the harm, alongside sadness at the loss
- Grieving time, plans, or a future you imagined
- Grieving the version of you who didn't yet know what you know now
You can miss something and still know it wasn't good for you. Both things can be true.
Our Grief & Trauma module explores grief in more depth, including grief that doesn't fit neatly into a tidy story.
