Tolerating healthy space

Staying with yourself when someone is temporarily unavailable.

  1. 1Notice the alarmName it: something in me is frightened by this gap.
  2. 2Slow the bodyA longer out-breath, feet on the floor, cold water.
  3. 3Check the evidenceWhat is known, separately from what is feared.
  4. 4Offer yourself the reassuranceIn the words you would want to hear.
  5. 5Choose the next small thingSomething that is yours, not about the relationship.
This is a practice for ordinary distance, not for relationships where you feel unsafe. If something is frightening you, that deserves support rather than tolerance.

You might explore these in your own words — there is no right answer, and stopping partway is completely fine.
